It was the third time Susanne Taylor and CFlow had cooperated with VitaminT, although this time it was a full engagement in the process of co-creation and partnership. Not only was the client fully satisfied with the impact it had at the event and the importance of shifting the mindset about change for their employees, it set up Susanne to have a fully engaged audience the next day at a short feedback training session.
After the intervention, the project leaders Verena Angsüßer and Michael Schaller from VitaminT asked Susanne Taylor from CFlow to describe her retrospective on this joint project:
“Susanne, could you give a brief description of the situation for this kick-off-event?”
“Definiens, an innovative leader in tissue phenomics based in Munich, wanted something special for their annual kick-off event in January. With my partnership, they had the idea of using Change Theater to inspire and support organizational change that was already underway.
With the whole company gathered for 2 days, the VitaminT team and I had an exciting opportunity to work on three topics that emerged from company-wide interviews: collaboration, feedback, and trust.
The challenge was the diversity within Definiens, especially the blending of Bavarian “be direct, be honest” approach with the American “be positive” attitude. The importance of being accurate and fast, especially in the fast paced blend of medical science and technology, seemed to create further issues.”
“What were they like to work with?”
“We had a very open and curious reception from the Global HR Director Francesca Altieri and her team, who were looking for something fresh, engaging and fun – but something that would also have an impact on scientist-types. (Test, test, research, test again!) Even the CEO and CMO were curious and supportive when it came to designing the topics and co-creating scenes.”
“What was especially challenging in this situation?”
“As is often the case, the question whether the employees would feel singled out or resistant to the topics presented. How would they react to seeing their reality portrayed on stage? Would they be open to what we would present?”
“Where were the expectations of VItaminT?”
“Together with HR and the CEO, we were able to cleverly develop scenarios that reflected the current climate and several real-life situations in the company, and yet keep it general enough that no one person would feel unsafe.”
“How was the project managed?”
“In interviews, which were done together with VitaminT and myself, we were able to get clear impressions of core topics and impressions from every level of the organization- from testers to managers. By creating Impulse scenes from these interviews we were able to create accurate portrayals that employees could identify with.”
“What was the initial impact?”
“During the Impulse scenes there was often short bursts of laughter, so it was immediately obvious that people saw their situation up on stage. It also meant they felt heard and seen by the management. “Oh, yeah, that’s totally what it’s like here.” “
“What was special about VitaminT from the perspective of the client?”
“That what was reflected on stage was playful, but accurate, and at the same time took the situation seriously.
One employee later told us. “We just loved the way you made it light and approachable and not-threatening, especially around the topic of feedback – because that’s a tricky one,” she said.”
